Recent Experience - Redmi 4 2GB 16GB vs Redmi 5A 3GB 32GB
After long, I have had the most fortunate luck to own and
experience two of XiaoMi’s very recent launches in the Indian market. We have
also known for quite some time now that the company has remained very careful
in launching it product in the Indian market. They surely have wooed the Indian
crowd with the “Made in India” label on its boxes; grown out of the Modi
Government’s insistence on a lower dependency on exports to increase or rather
boost up the countries manufacturing capacity per capita.
Phones:
1 1)
Redmi 4 2GB 16GB
2 2)
Redmi 5A 3GB 32GB (Launched Oct’17)
Price: ₹ 6,999 (both)
Review:
Xiaomi Redmi 5A smartphone comes with a 5 inch touchscreen
display with a resolution of 720 pixels by 1280 pixels at a PPI of 294 pixels
per inch. Although, the phone starts for ₹ 4,999 in India for its cheaper variants;
I would personally not recommend buying those though as over time Mi phones
with compact memories start showing slowness.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5A is powered by 1.4GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor and it comes with 3GB of RAM. The phone packs 32GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 256GB via a microSD card. It dawns with separate SIM compartments (SIM+microSD; SIM) which is a cool introduction to the Mi Redmi category and supports only Nano-SIM cards. As far as the cameras are concerned, the Redmi 5A packs a 13-megapixel primary camera on the rear and a 5-megapixel front camera. We would not recommend them for low light photography, as the sensors don’t quite work effectively under such conditions. It runs on Android 7.1.2 and is powered by a 3000mAh pump which wasn’t surprising thereafter.

Redmi 4 smartphone is more than a year old; launched in
later part of 2016. The phone comes with a 5 inch touch display with a
resolution of 720 pixels by 1280 pixels at a PPI of 296 pixels per inch. The phone
is powered with octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor and it comes with
3GB of RAM. The phone packs 32GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to
128GB via a microSD card. As compared to Redmi 5A the camera quality doesn’t show
any significant difference. The functionalities are also similar in both
phones, just that Redmi 4 runs Android 6.0.1 from factory. However, Mi has been
very prompt in providing the latest updates to the phone; Android 7 or MIUI 9 has also rolled in Gobal Stable
ROM for the phone.
Redmi 4 is powered by a 4100mAh non removable battery which
adds to the bonuses. The connectivity options for both phones include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth,
Infrared, USB OTG, FM, 3G BUT 4G supports only Band 40 which might be an issue
with some Indian carriers such as Vodafone in Maharashtra & Goa Circle. Redmi
enjoys a few extra perks on the phone including Compass Magnetometer, Proximity
sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor and Gyroscope.
Recommendation:
Given that both the phones are priced the same; it should be
an easy choice. If you are looking for extra space go for the 5A and for better
performance overall I would give Redmi 4 an A+. Please don’t go by my words,
this is just an experience but I’m being unbiased. Kindly buy any product at
your own discretion.
